With this performance, Yannick Nézet-Séguin launches his complete cycle of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies during the 2026–2027 Carnegie Hall season. Leading the world-class Philadelphia Orchestra, he begins the cycle with Mahler’s Fifth, the composer’s first symphony to exist as absolute music, with no overt programmatic storytelling. “What is orchestral music? Here’s the example … it’s a symphony that has everything,” said Nézet-Séguin in an interview with WRTI. The program also features Webern’s first complete orchestral work, the evocative Im Sommerwind; and the New York premiere of Julia Wolfe’s raucous and resonant Liberty Bell, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall.
