Dream of the Cherry Blossoms
by Keiko Abe

Keiko Abe's Dream of the Cherry Blossoms is one of her most lyrical compositions — a contrast to the virtuosic showpieces for which she is often known. The work evokes the fleeting, bittersweet beauty of sakura (cherry blossoms) in a language that combines impressionistic harmonics, pentatonic melody, and subtle cross-rhythms. Abe, considered the founding figure of the modern concert marimba, composed it as both a personal meditation and a vehicle for exploring the marimba's cantabile singing register. It is widely taught in Japan and internationally as a model of expressive marimba writing.
