Wind in the Bamboo Grove
by Keiko Abe
Keiko Abe's Wind in the Bamboo Grove (1990) is one of the most evocative and technically demanding pieces in the solo marimba repertoire, conceived as a sonic portrait of bamboo forests stirred by wind — from the lightest breeze through its opening single-mallet lines to a full tempest in the climactic passages requiring four-mallet technique of the highest order. Abe (born 1937), arguably the most important figure in the development of the modern marimba as a concert instrument, composed the piece to showcase the full range of dynamics and colour available on the five-octave instrument, from the softest harmonics to fortissimo cluster chords. It remains a favourite in international marimba competitions and a showcase piece for advanced marimbists.
