Adagio for Strings, Op. 11
by Samuel Barber
ViolinViolaCello20th CenturyAdagio~8 minintermediate
The most famous American classical work. Originally the slow movement of Barber's String Quartet, Toscanini conducted its premiere broadcast in 1938. Played at the funerals of FDR, JFK, and Princess Grace. Its single arch of melody, building to a searing climax before dissolving into silence, is devastatingly simple and deeply moving.
