Piano Concerto No. 5 "Emperor", Op. 73

The grandest piano concerto of the classical era, composed while Napoleon's armies bombarded Vienna. The opening three orchestral chords answered by cascading piano cadenzas set a new standard for the genre. Beethoven eliminated the traditional first-movement cadenza, writing out every note. The Adagio's hushed beauty contrasts with the jubilant Rondo finale.
