Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80

by Johannes Brahms

OrchestraRomanticOverture~11 minadvanced

Written in 1880 as a ceremonial acknowledgement of an honorary doctorate from the University of Breslau, the Academic Festival Overture weaves together four German student songs — including the rousing 'Gaudeamus igitur' — into a brilliant concert overture. Brahms reportedly quipped that it was 'a rollicking potpourri of student drinking songs'. Its wit, craftsmanship, and irresistible climax have made it one of the most frequently programmed short orchestral works in the repertoire.
