String Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 51 No. 1, Op. 51 No. 1

by Johannes Brahms

Brahms reportedly destroyed more than twenty string quartets before publishing this pair as Op. 51. The C minor quartet opens with a turbulent Allegro that fuses Classical rigour with Romantic intensity, followed by a deeply lyrical Romance. The finale's obsessive rhythmic drive and complex voice-leading show Brahms at his most architecturally demanding.
