Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98

Brahms's final symphony, culminating in a monumental passacaglia built on a theme from Bach's Cantata 150. The work looks backward and forward simultaneously, combining Baroque contrapuntal technique with Romantic orchestral color. The flute solo in the first movement and the clarinet passages throughout are standard audition excerpts.
