Impromptu for Harp, Op. 86
by Gabriel Fauré
Fauré's Impromptu Op. 86 (1904) was composed for the Paris Conservatoire harp examinations and has since become one of the most beloved character pieces in the solo harp repertoire. Fauré originally wrote it for piano but revised it idiomatically for harp at the request of the Conservatoire. Its flowing arpeggio accompaniment, languid melody, and subtle harmonic colour perfectly suit the instrument. Brief but endlessly expressive, the Impromptu is a staple of harp recitals and conservatoire assessments worldwide.
