Wind Quintet, Op. 43
by Carl Nielsen
Nielsen's Wind Quintet (1922) stands alongside Schoenberg's Op. 26 as a cornerstone of the wind chamber repertoire. Written after hearing the Copenhagen Wind Quintet rehearse, Nielsen reportedly crafted the work as a set of character portraits for each player. The opening Allegro ben moderato is immediately engaging; the central Menuet shows dry wit; and the remarkable Theme and Variations finale assigns each instrument a contrasting character, ending with a Bach chorale. The work balances humour, lyricism, and Nielsen's characteristic tonal ambiguity.
