Histoire du Tango
by Astor Piazzolla
Piazzolla's Histoire du Tango (1986), composed for flute and guitar, is a four-movement suite that traces the history of the tango across the twentieth century. Each movement evokes a different era and venue: a seedy brothel in 1900s Buenos Aires, a nightclub in the 1930s, a concert performance in the 1960s, and a contemporary reflection. The music ranges from raw, sultry eroticism to jazz-inflected sophistication and introspective lyricism. Originally for flute and guitar, it has been arranged for virtually every chamber combination. It is among the most frequently performed contemporary chamber works worldwide.
