Concertstück for Harp and Orchestra, Op. 39

by Gabriel Pierné

Pierné's Concertstück (1901) is one of the jewels of the harp concertante repertoire, written with a flair for brilliant salon-style writing that barely conceals its considerable technical demands. The work was written for the legendary harpist Henriette Renié, who premiered it, and its single-movement form combines lyrical fantasy with virtuosic display in a way perfectly suited to the instrument's capabilities. The opening Andante moderato introduces a singing cantabile theme of Romantic warmth before the music accelerates into a dazzling Allegro vivo section showing off the harp's full range of glissandi, arpeggios, and harmonics. Pierné was a consummate orchestral colorist as well as a fine melodist, and the orchestral writing provides an iridescent backdrop to the solo part without ever overwhelming it. The piece remains a staple of the orchestral harp repertoire and a favorite with audiences unfamiliar with the instrument's concertante potential.
