Piano Sonata No. 7 "Stalingrad", Op. 83

The second of Prokofiev's "War Sonatas," premiered by Sviatoslav Richter in 1943. The explosive final movement in 7/8 time, marked Precipitato, is one of the most viscerally exciting endings in all piano literature. The middle movement's eerie, mechanical march captures the atmosphere of wartime Soviet Russia.
