View from Olympus
by John Psathas
John Psathas's View from Olympus (1996) has become one of the most widely performed contemporary marimba solos internationally, beloved for its combination of Mediterranean folk-influenced melody, driving virtuosic passages, and deep expressive lyricism. The New Zealand composer draws on his Greek heritage in a work that begins with a contemplative, almost hymn-like opening and builds through increasingly passionate and technically demanding passages to a transcendent conclusion. The four-mallet writing demands complete independence of hands, a singing legato tone, and an ability to sustain long phrases at the instrument's extremes of range. View from Olympus is now standard repertoire at international marimba competitions worldwide.
