Written when Rachmaninoff was 19, this became his most famous piece, to his eventual annoyance. The tolling bell-like opening chords, the agitated middle section, and the thunderous return of the main theme make it one of the most dramatic short piano pieces ever written. Audiences demanded it at every concert.
