Six Japanese Gardens
by Kaija Saariaho
Kaija Saariaho's Six Japanese Gardens (1993-95) is one of the defining works for marimba and electronics, composed during her stay at IRCAM in Paris and premiered at the Salzburg Festival. Each of the six movements evokes a specific Japanese garden -- from the meditative tranquility of moss gardens to the rhythmic patterns of rock and gravel -- while Saariaho's spectral electronic processing transforms the marimba's resonances into an immersive sonic environment. The work established Saariaho's reputation as a composer of extraordinary timbral imagination, and has become one of the most performed works in the contemporary marimba repertoire. The electronics part requires precise synchronization and venue-specific adaptation.
