Piano Trio No. 1 in B-flat major, D. 898, Op. 99

Composed in 1827 and published posthumously in 1836, the Piano Trio in B-flat major D. 898 is among the sunniest and most immediately appealing of Schubert's late chamber works, a glowing counterpart to the more turbulent Second Trio in E-flat. Its four movements inhabit a world of expansive lyricism — the opening Allegro moderato spins long, arching melodies through warmly scored dialogue, the Andante un poco mosso breathes a spirit of gentle improvisation, the Scherzo dances with infectious buoyancy, and the Rondo finale moves with Viennese charm. Together the two piano trios of 1827 mark the apex of the Romantic piano trio repertoire.
