String Quintet in C major, D. 956

Written weeks before Schubert's death and often considered his greatest chamber work. Scored for the unusual combination of two cellos (rather than two violas), giving it an extraordinarily rich and dark sonority. The Adagio slow movement, with its devastating middle section, is one of the most profoundly beautiful passages in all music.
