Piano Quintet in A major "Trout", D. 667
by Franz Schubert
Composed in 1819 during a summer holiday in Steyr, the "Trout" Quintet takes its nickname from the fourth movement's variations on Schubert's song "Die Forelle." The unusual scoring — piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass rather than the traditional string quartet — was requested by the amateur cellist Sylvester Paumgartner. The result is one of Schubert's sunniest, most spontaneous chamber works, suffused with the joy of its Alpine origins.
