Dedicated "to the victims of fascism and war," though widely understood as autobiographical, possibly even a suicide note. Built entirely on Shostakovich's musical monogram D-S-C-H (D-Eb-C-B in German notation), it quotes extensively from his own works. Composed in three days in Dresden, the devastated city left a profound impact on the composer.
