Two Mexican Dances

Gordon Stout's Two Mexican Dances (1977) are among the most widely performed marimba solos in the repertoire, appearing on international competition programmes and conservatoire curricula worldwide. The two movements — "Huapango" (a traditional Mexican dance in fast 3/4+2/4) and "Son" — challenge the performer with virtuosic four-mallet technique, rhythmic complexity, and the need to balance melodic singing lines against driving ostinato patterns. Stout, professor of marimba at Ithaca College, composed these dances as showpieces that are also genuinely musical, making them ideal for both competition and recital contexts.
