The Rite of Spring

by Igor Stravinsky

OrchestraModernBallet~34 minprofessional

Premiered in Paris on 29 May 1913, The Rite of Spring caused one of music history's most famous riots. Choreographed by Nijinsky for the Ballets Russes, it depicts a pagan ritual culminating in a sacrificial maiden dancing herself to death. Stravinsky's score, with its ferocious polyrhythm, angular folk-derived themes, dissonant "Augurs of Spring" chord, and stratospheric bassoon opening, permanently altered the trajectory of Western music.
