Ionisation

by Edgard Varèse

Percussion Ensemble20th CenturyTone Poem~6 minprofessional

Completed in 1931 and premiered in New York in 1933, Ionisation was the first work in the Western concert tradition to be scored exclusively for percussion instruments (13 performers on 37 instruments) alongside sirens and a lion's roar. Varèse drew the title from physics: the ionisation of atoms. The piece explores the organisation of sound through rhythm, density, and timbre rather than pitch, exerting a profound influence on the development of electronic and experimental music.
