Bülow famously called it "an opera in church vestments." The Dies Irae, with its thundering bass drum strokes and terrifying brass, is the most dramatic setting of this text ever composed. Written to honor the novelist Alessandro Manzoni, it is the supreme achievement of Italian Romantic sacred music.
