Rebonds for solo percussion
by Iannis Xenakis
Xenakis's Rebonds (1987-89) consists of two unaccompanied percussion solos -- Rebonds A and Rebonds B -- that may be performed separately or together in either order. The work deploys a single player on a battery of drums and woodblocks, exploring the mathematical and stochastic principles that governed much of Xenakis's compositional output: irregular rhythmic groupings, densities that build to explosive climaxes, and sudden silences that heighten the percussive attack. Rebonds is widely regarded as the most important solo percussion work of the late 20th century, requiring not only technical brilliance but a deep understanding of Xenakis's spatial and rhythmic thinking. It has become a standard work at international percussion competitions, particularly the ARD.
