A German Requiem, Op. 45

Not a liturgical requiem but a meditation on mortality using German biblical texts chosen by Brahms himself. The work comforts the living rather than praying for the dead. "Blessed are they that mourn" opens with a warmth that pervades the entire work. The soprano solo "Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit" is heartbreaking.
